Why Harvest Your Herbs?
To eat them of course! It turns out this is not the only reason, however. Light pruning helps induce more growth, and in some plants actually encourages one stem to branch into two. ‘Topping’ is the process of trimming off the upper leaves in order to spur the plant to develop multiple stem.
Your plant is ready to be ‘topped’ once it has developed three separate sets of leaves. This is usually when it’s 3-4 inches tall. Cut the main stem about a half inch above the first set of mature leaves
That’s it! We’d suggest this is a great time for a taste test of your first mini-harvest. While it may feel like you’re taking a step backwards, in the long run this is likely to lead to a much bigger and healthier plant!
