The first zinnias were discovered in Mexico and brought to Europe by the Spaniards in the 1500’s. The first plant was very small with little foliage and tiny flowers. The plant was brought to Europe by the mid 1600’s where it was then discovered and described by Dr. Johann Gottfried Zinn, where their very name comes from. Later, in 1796, a zinnia was brought to Europe by way of Brazil. This zinnia became widely loved. It produced larger, lusher flowers in a wide range of colors. Zinnias were first introduced to the United States in 1798, but was fairly unpopular. Later, bright colored zinnias made their way into gardens across North America. The Starlight Rose Zinnia has superior disease resistance to leaf spot and mildew and allows for a long life.
Make your cakes more beautiful by adding Zinnia as an edible garnish. You can also mix them in with lettuce as a base for a colorful salad.
